LIGHTING
USE OF LIGHTS
All lights and reflectors must be clean and in good working order at all times, including the hours of daylight. Most lamps must be used between sunset and sunrise but headlamps are needed from ½ hour after sunset to ½ hour before sunrise. Headlamps, front and rear foglamps and reversing lamps must be fitted so that they do not dazzle other road users.
No red light must be shown to the front
No white light to be shown to the rear except:-
1. for reversing
2. to illuminate rear number plate
3. to illuminate interior.
MINIMUM OBLIGATORY
LIGHTS
FRONT POSITION LAMPS
Two required, forming a pair.
May be white or yellow if incorporated in headlamps emitting a yellow light.
Must bear an approval mark.
HEADLAMPS
Two required, forming a pair.
May have yellow or white beams.
Must be fitted with main and dipped beams.
Main beams must be fitted to vehicles with a maximum speed over 25 mph.
Dipped beams must be fitted to vehicles with a maximum speed over 15mph.
Headlamps must be used during the hours of darkness on roads where streetlamps are more then 200 yards apart and in poor visibility at any time.
Headlamps must be switched off when the vehicle is parked.
They must not be more than 1200mm nor less than 500mm from the ground.
REAR POSITION LAMPS
Two required forming a pair.
Red in colour.
Must bear an approval mark.
STOP LAMPS
Two required, forming a pair.
Red in colour.
Must be illuminated when the footbrake is applied.
